Edmund M. "Ted" Sexton, Sr., assumed
the office of Sheriff of Tuscaloosa County on January 15, 1991.
He has since been re–elected by the citizens of Tuscaloosa
County and his currently serving his fourth term as the Sheriff
of Tuscaloosa County.
With twenty-five years of law enforcement experience ranging
from numerous professional schools. These schools include graduate
F.B.I. National Academy, the U.S. Secret Service Dignitary Protection
Seminar, National Sheriffs' Institute, F.B.I. Law Enforcement
Executive Development, a graduate of the University of Alabama
Law Enforcement Academy, National Institute of Corrections and
The Landespolizeischula fur Diensthundfuhrer, Stukenbrock, Germany.
The Sheriff's duties and responsibilities include service to
eight courts, civil process, operation of 540-bed jail, law enforcement
jurisdiction for 1340 square miles within Tuscaloosa County,
and managing an operational budget of 10 million dollars with 208
employees. The Sheriff's Office has initiated several community
oriented policing programs which include, Amber Plan, C.O.N.E.S.,
Project Lifesaver, School Resource Deputies, Resident Deputies,
Parent to Parent Talks (Don't do stupid stuff!), and numerous other
units that provide service to our community. The Tuscaloosa County
Jail is the only jail in the State of Alabama that meets national standards
set forth through accreditation by the American Corrections
Association.
Sheriff attended high school at Culver Military Academy, Culver,
Indiana and attended Livingston University before earning a
Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Alabama. The Sheriff
serves as a member of the Board of Visitors for the University of Alabama
College of Continuing Studies.
His activities locally include Past President of Central Branch
Y.M.C.A., President Y.M.C.A. Metropolitan Board, E911 Board,
Member Character First Committee, and Tuscaloosa Rotary Club. The
Sheriff has served on several other civic boards within Tuscaloosa
County. On a state level he is the Past President of the Alabama Sheriffs'
Association, serves on the State of Alabama Homeland Defense
Terrorism Task Force, Chairman of the Alabama E.M.A. Mutual Aid Formation
Committee as well as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District
of Alabama Terrorism Task Force, member of the Sentencing Review
Commission, Governor's School Violence Task Force, Commissioner
for Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
Sheriff Sexton is currently a Vice President with the National
Sheriffs' Association and will assume the President's Chair
in 2005. He chairs several committees for the National Sheriffs' Association
and represents them in matters involving homeland defense and
weapons of mass destruction.
Ted is a graduate of the 1985-1986 class of Leadership Tuscaloosa.
He is also a graduate of Leadership Alabama 1997-1998. Sheriff
